Ask for help! My Pizza Party Pit Crew…

    By Darren | January 14, 2008

I don’t know why we do this sometimes…people offer to help and we say “no.” We don’t want to “put people out” or think we don’t “need” anyone. A valuable lesson I learned from one of my comedy mentors, Dave Fitzgerald, when he was battling cancer. On our video: Healing, Hope, and Humor he talks stresses the fact that friends would LOVE to help us. Dave says,”LET THEM!”I took his advice this weekend.

I had been feeling overwhelmed and trying to get a crucial mailing out to people who have purchased educational tools from me before. It is a special ONLY for people who have a CD of mine already interested in professional speaking. Timing being crucial and needing to leave for Orlando for our boot camps this week, I was just plain stressed. My friend Pam suggested a mailing “pizza party.”

Apparently I have some pretty amazing friends here in Vegas. They busted thier butts for me. Since I needed it done fast they snapped into action, so they, in effect, were my pizza party pit crew!

THANK YOU to Pam, Bryant, Sherri, Bill, Guy, and Chey! It was very cool. And we shared lots of laughs while getting a major project accomplished. If you want to accomplish amazing things, you can’t do it all alone! I’m finally getting better asking for help. Are you?

Asking time, asking time, asking time,

Darren, I hadn’t looked at your website in a while. Seeing you talk was awesome. Stirred me up. I looked at my speech videos this weekend and in one of them I tell about the 3 things about me that are different since my husband died. I tell a story about how I asked a friend to help me with my computer and I was truly taken aback when he thanked me for asking. People really do want to help. I never really asked people for help before. It was a huge realization! I never even asked my late husband for help. He did everything. I do tell a joke about mountains of laundry, the one thing he never did. I had some pretty strong thoughts about you as you pizza partied Darren.

I suppose it is time for a confession. I am 40 years old. I still have a few old habits. One of them is not asking for help. I believe I have a typically old-fashioned mindset, where the MAN (sarcasm intended) takes care of things so his family can depend on him. I know logically that this opinion is wrong. But I must admit, it is still an effort to push past it each time.
