Coaching a World Champion: Interview with Darren and Vikas

    By Darren | May 11, 2008

What is it like being coached as a presenter? What is it like coaching a World Champion?

Well, my original NSA chapter from New England invited Vikas Jhingran, 2007 World Champion of Public Speaking and me to speak at one of their chapter meetings. Out of 25,000 contestants, we were both fortunate enough to win the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking representing Massachusetts(we are the only ones to win from New England since the contest began in 1938). Though we both gave educational sessions at the meeting, we were asked if we would answer questions from the audience.

They were very interested in the fact that I helped coach Vikas on his winning speech (he did have other coaches as well). In this short video clip we were asked:

    1) When giving a speech over and over again, how do you keep it fresh and interesting to yourself?

    2) What was transfered to you (Darren) being coached, to coaching Vikas?

    3) Without memorizing, how do you keep your stories tight?

Want to hear those answers? (click play on the video below)

PS: I was personally blown away by the educational session that Vikas gave at the event!
