Thank You Toastmasters; How does Darren “connect” with audience?

    By Darren | May 27, 2008

When I speak at a Toastmasters District Conference I’m sometimes invited to perform my “clean comedy” routine for part of their Friday Night Event. Before I start the “performance” I always pull up a bar stool and ask the audience if it is OK if, before we get started, I just “talk to them.” And tell them the story of how I got started in Toastmasters.

How do you “plan to connect?” What are your best stories that the audience can relate to? (Mine is about starting out and being scared. It is also about a lack of “belief” in myself.) Sometimes it takes encouragement from others to push us to where we need to be.

People in a Toastmasters club usually have an easier time connecting, than people speaking “outside” of Toastmasters. Myself included. Study these video clips.

I appreciate what Toastmasters has done for me. And I appreciate what individuals within the organization have done to make me who I am today. I know others will shape the person I become tomorrow. Who do you show appreciation to in your presentations?

I sincerely hope you take the time to study these video clips, and ask yourself: What are the crucial “elements” that create the connection, and how can you use those same elements to create your connection?

I’m off to get stage time in China!

Darren, you made my day! I am new to Toastmasters (6 months) and just been appointed (voluntarily) VP Education of the Port-Louis Toastmasters club (in Mauritius). The speech you gave in this club (videod here) is just what I needed to give perspective to my new role at TM and even my daily job as Sales Manager. Encouragement is seldom given, particularly in difficult moment, and can make a whole difference. Thank you and I look forward for your new posts.
