Heart-felt Humor Mentor Moment, Thanks Vinnie
By Darren | July 21, 2008
Do you practice what you preach? How about what you write?
I wrote an article not long ago about thanking your mentor. It made me think. Sometimes verbal just ain’t enough. Sometimes you have to do something that stands out.
I always remember, from my early days of stand-up comedy when My mentor Vinnie Favorito was on stage he would mention me in the back of the room. It made me feel good. Cool even. Though I had no talent, no material, no confidence. Nothing, but a dream and hope. Turns out, that along with a good mentor is all you really need. Vinnie had pointed out to me that many people who are naturally funny around their friend’s will never, ever become comedians. For one reason, and one reason only.
They are not “willing to fail.”
At the Humor Boot Camp® this past weekend in Las Vegas I decided to make a memorable moment and say “thank you” to Vinnie in front of our class. I wanted to edify him in front of an audience. A place where he loves to be. A place where he made it possible for me to be. He gave me hope. I gave him a sword that I brought back from my speaking trip to China. The video clip below is that moment.
How will you honor a mentor in your life?
Stage time, Stage time, Stage time,

Darren LaCroix, 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking
P.S. If you ever heard the phrase “Stage time,” I was just passing that along, wisdom from my mentor, Vinnie Favorito.
